In this week’s ETFs & Markets video, Chief ETF Strategist Todd Sohn discusses recent developments across ETF themes — updating a popular table on $1 trillion company exposures, noting the broadening in sector flows, and highlighting his view that Japan ETF demand remains surprisingly subdued.
Definitions:
S&P 500 – A widely used stock market index that tracks 500 large-cap U.S. companies across multiple sectors.
Equity ETF – An ETF that invests primarily in stocks, providing exposure to a broad market or specific sectors.
Cyclical Sector - Cyclical sectors are industries that thrive during economic expansions and decline during downturns, with performances closely tied to consumer discretionary spending and macroeconomic health. Key sectors include Consumer Discretionary, Financials, Industrials, Materials, and Information Technology. These companies often produce non-essential, "nice-to-have" goods.
Defensive Sector - Defensive sectors consist of industries providing essential products and services that can maintain stable demand regardless of economic conditions. These sectors feature low-beta stocks that offer consistent dividends and reduced volatility, perhaps making them ideal for cushioning portfolios during market downturns or recessions.
S&P 500 ETF (SPY) - The State Street® SPDR® S&P 500® ETF Trust seeks to provide investment results that, before expenses, correspond generally to the price and yield performance of the S&P 500® Index (the “Index”).
Nasdaq 100 ETF (QQQ) - The Invesco NASDAQ 100 ETF (QQQ) is based on the NASDAQ-100 Index (Index). The Fund will invest at least 90% of its total assets in the securities that comprise the Index. The Index includes securities of 100 of the largest domestic and international nonfinancial companies listed on Nasdaq. The Fund and Index are rebalanced quarterly and reconstituted annually.
Russell 1000 Growth ETF (IWF) - The iShares Russell 1000 Growth ETF seeks to track the investment results of an index composed of large- and mid-capitalization U.S. equities that exhibit growth characteristics.
Russell 1000 Value ETF (IWF) - The iShares Russell 1000 Value ETF seeks to track the investment results of an index composed of large- and mid-capitalization U.S. equities that exhibit value characteristics.
Quality Factor ETF ( QUAL) - The iShares MSCI USA Quality Factor ETF seeks to track the investment results of an index composed of U.S. large- and mid-capitalization stocks with quality characteristics as identified through certain fundamental metrics.
Thematic Rotation ETF (THRO) - The iShares U.S. Thematic Rotation Active ETF seeks long-term capital appreciation. Seeks to dynamically rotate exposure to U.S. market themes ranging from long-term, structural forces to rapidly evolving trends.
Momentum ETF (MTUM) - The iShares MSCI USA Momentum Factor ETF seeks to track the investment results of an index composed of U.S. large- and mid-capitalization stocks exhibiting relatively higher price momentum.
Healthcare Sector - The healthcare sector is an economic grouping of industries, encompassing companies that manufacture medical products, drugs, and equipment, or provide healthcare services like diagnostics, hospital care, and insurance.
Industrials Sector - The industrials sector consists of companies producing capital goods and services for industrial applications, rather than directly for consumers. It includes manufacturing, construction, aerospace, defense, machinery, and logistics, often acting as an economic bellwether for business investment.
Europe - A Europe ETF is an investment fund traded on stock exchanges that provides diversified exposure to a basket of stocks from European companies, often tracking major indices like the MSCI Europe or STOXX Europe 600.
Japan - A Japan ETF (Exchange-Traded Fund) is a pooled investment vehicle that tracks a basket of securities—primarily equities—domiciled in Japan, offering access to the Japanese stock market (e.g., Nikkei 225 or MSCI Japan Index).
